Bechsteins from 1900 onwards are excellent
pianos. I haven't played many of the uprights, but own a 6'8" model B
piano (1907) that compares favourably with any Steinway instrument. The tone
is different to that of the Steinways, more mellow (perhaps like the Bluthner's).
In my opinion, an unrestored Bechstein of this period wears better than any
other piano I have come across. The Bechstein name has not become known to
say quality without producing quality instruments
