Steinway & Sons was founded in 1853 by German immigrant Henry Engelhard Steinway and the first Steinway piano to be produced under the "Steinway & Sons" name was sold to a New York family for $500.
Henry Steinway and his 5 sons spent the next forty years perfecting the designs of Steinway pianos and during this period about 50 of Steinway's current 114 patents were invented.
It took only 10-15 years for Steinway and Sons to become the choice instrument for concert pianists and for royal music halls and sales began to increase. The Steinway Music Hall of New York housed the New York Philharmonic for around 25 years before Carnagie Hall opened in 1891.
At about this time, Steinway Village was created in the Queens district of New York. Virtually its own town, Steinway Village boasted its own foundries, factory, post office, parks and housing for employees.
Henry Steinway died in 1871 leaving his Sons to carry on the good work - they went on to invent over 40 more patents.
Today the Steinway and Sons Piano factories produce around 5000 new pianos per year and Steinway pianos are still enjoying their position as the choice instrument of the professional pianist... and just about anyone else who can afford to buy one.
